I’ve been to jail and eventually bonded out 3 times this year. My car’s been impounded twice. All of this was in 3 different counties. What the fuck.

MENTALLY ILL WOMAN TASED TO DEATH WHILE SHACKELED, BEATEN, AND HANDCUFFED

Natasha Mckenna, a mentally ill woman who died after a stun gun was used on her at the Fairfax County jail in February, was restrained with handcuffs behind her back, leg shackles and a mask when a sheriff’s deputy tasered her four times, incident reports obtained by The Washington Post show.

Six members of the Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team, dressed in white full-body biohazard suits and gas masks, arrived and placed a wildly struggling 130-pound McKenna into full restraints, their reports state. But when McKenna wouldn’t bend her knees so she could be placed into a wheeled restraint chair, a lieutenant delivered four 50,000-volt shocks from the Taser, enabling the other deputies to strap her into the chair.

Minutes later, she stopped breathing. Days later, she died.

The truth is, though, that police have been covering up the real details on Natasha’s death for months. And, even after all of this, police are not quite clear on why Natasha McKenna was even jailed in the first place. On the day she was arrested, she had actually called the police herself to report being assaulted and appeared to be struggling mightily with mental illness before she bounced around between hospitals and jails for days.

Nothing has happened to the officers yet.

Bernie Sanders: It’s time to raise the minimum wage so that a minimum-wage job will lift a person out of poverty not keep them in it.
Republicans: But inflation!!1!
Economists: The minimum wage hasn't been raised since 2009 and the economy has expanded considerably since then, so actually, an increase in the minimum wage is due to keep the working class in line with the cost of living.
Republicans: I don't know suddenly I cannot read.

New piece over on Vantage about photographer H. Lee’s embed on a Humboldt County weed farm.

Lee spent the year running up to the fiercely contested Proposition 19 on a the farm. Prop. 19 was a ballot initiative that proposed regulation and taxing of the California marijuana industry. Small-holding growers feared it’s passage would mean the destruction of their livelihoods. Lee had been visiting a pot farm for 8 years and never made an image, but in 2010 when massive, crushing change loomed, she took up her camera.

H. Lee is a psuedonym. Promising subjects their anonymity by proxy of her own just made things easier.

“I gave my word to the people I photographed — whether I shot their faces, body parts, plants or farms — that I would use a pseudonym when presenting the work,” says Lee. “I only photographed those who were willing to be photographed.”
